self affirmation

Even if you’ve never heard of affirmations before, you’ve probably used them at some point. Any time you say “I’ve got this,” when trying something new or, “I’m going to be fine,” when facing your fears, you’re using positive affirmations. Put simply, these are positive phrases you can use to affirm your capabilities, instill confidence, and reach your goals.

Anyone can use affirmations. They can be particularly beneficial when you’re struggling with self-confidence or working to overcome another challenge in life. Affirmations can help you change your mindset and become your most capable self when they’re complemented by intentional action. In fact, one of the most valuable and impactful steps to becoming your best self is changing your thought patterns.

How Can I Use Affirmations to Become My Best Self?

At NextSelf, we believe that every individual has the answers they need. Self improvement isn’t always about external coaching, it’s often about reflecting inward and putting in the necessary work to be the person you want to become. We also feel that everyone should have access to quality coaching and guidance — there should be no barriers to self-improvement. Self affirmations are one of the most accessible tools you can implement to begin working on yourself.

Ronald Alexander, psychotherapist at the OpenMind® Training Institute, recommends writing your affirmations in a journal and practicing them in the mirror to make them more powerful. There aren’t any requirements for how often to use affirmations. It’s best to find what works for you — the magic number will likely be between 2-5 times per day.

Just like your body gets stronger through physical exercise, self-affirmations are a mental exercise that can be used in a similar way. A recent study using MRI evidence shows that positive affirmations help build the mental muscles needed to face challenges and overcome adversity.

Saying affirmations is great, but you need to practice what you preach! Use affirmations to put you in the right mindset, then make a concentrated effort toward your goals. Implementing affirmations as part of your daily routine can help you be more disciplined in your mindset and efforts toward achieving your goals.

The affirmations below are designed to help you get started with your practice. We recommend using them as inspiration to develop your own, unique affirmations that are tied to your experiences, goals, and aspirations.
